The Big Questions – Kristy Miller, The Scented Market

The Scented Market is a lifestyle brand offering handmade, eco-friendly products for your home and body.

They are best known for their clean-burning soy candles, which are made with 100% natural soy wax, recyclable and reusable jars, and contain no dye, phthalates, or animal byproducts.

In addition, The Scented Market offers many other home and bath products to suit your needs, from scented counter sprays and dish soaps to bath bombs and body lotions.

You can check out The Scented Market at, and on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest (@thescentedmarket). Or, check out one of their four retail stores: Guelph, Fergus, Niagara on the Lake and Paris, ON.

Q: When was the moment you first knew you were meant to be an entrepreneur?

A: After doing some research many years ago, I recognized a lack of healthy soy wax candles in the industry. After further research, I found the best ingredients to create a simple, sophisticated, scented line of products — including soy candles and bath and body products. Not only did I want to create these products for my own family to use, but for others in my community as well.

Q: What is the biggest challenge you have faced starting your business?

A: The biggest challenge I faced when starting my business was not being taken seriously by some people who just thought my idea to sell candles was “cute”. I was motivated to prove them wrong and show that I’m not just the cute candle girl — I’m a businessperson offering a multitude of eco-friendly home products while also exemplifying a message of self-care and self-love.

Q: What is the most important piece of advice you would give to others who are starting their own business?

A: You need to have a message that’s important to you and be passionate about sharing it with others!  For me that’s two things: a lifestyle that encourages self-care and self-love and prioritizes sustainability and eco-friendliness.
